Drawing from India’s art-historical canon—from miniature to tribal traditions—Tarini Sethi constructs universes where the body is a site of boundless transformation. Inspired by sacred iconography, particularly multi-limbed deities and their animal counterparts, Sethi envisions evolutionary futures where fluid bodies are unbound by fixed notions of identity, biology, and gender.
For Frieze, the Indofuturist artist will create an immersive stainless-steel installation composed of four interconnected lattice panels, inviting viewers to enter her imaginary utopias. Weaving together motifs from Indian art history and speculative fiction, the work forms a relational architectural space where mythic bodies and landscape merge.
As light shifts throughout the day, the sculpture transforms, casting layered shadows that expand its forms beyond their material edges. The installation engages legacies of Western modernism while also recalling the ephemerality of Indian shadow puppetry, where meaning is constructed through the presence and absence of light.
Illumination is central to the work, as the structure is completed and transformed by light, movement, and the presence of the environment. The industrial history of stainless steel stands in dynamic tension with the organic landscape and the bodily sensibility of Sethi’s imagery. Over time, dust and patina will accumulate on the surface, further marking the sculpture’s connection to its environment.
Rather than proposing a singular utopia, the work envisions fragile, provisional harmonies—forms of coexistence shaped by hybridity rather than purity, plurality rather than division. Through mixed symbolic languages, Sethi gestures toward futures grounded in dialogue and interdependence and suggests that peace is not a fixed state but an ongoing practice of imagination.
