View on a Wall
Shrimanti Saha (b.1987, West Bengal, India), is an artist working in the medium of drawing, painting and animation. Her practice as an artist developed from her prior experience of working as a freelance illustrator with publishers and ad agencies. In her work, Saha draws references from a range of sources like history, literature, mythology, science fiction, comic books, art history, miniature paintings, news reports, as well as memory, conversation and personal experiences. This leads to the formation of surreal dream like landscapes and layered narratives, where different time periods amalgamate with each other. Her works can be viewed as a personal mythology or an alternative history; which delves into the themes of identity, gender, ecology, exploitation and control.Saha completed her BVA and MVA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara, India. After art school she worked as a freelance illustrator with publishers and ad agencies for a few years; following which she continued her full time art practice. Saha has been part of exhibitions and residencies in India and abroad.
