For nearly two decades, Jonny Negron has developed a distinctive figurative language in which contemporary life intersects with mythology, spirituality, and the subconscious. His saturated paintings move between intimate portraits, charged scenes of nightlife and social exchange, and still lifes of objects left in their wake. Beneath their immediate familiarity, these images are structured by recurring symbols and systems of meaning drawn from both Eastern and Western religious iconography, tarot, the occult, and art history. Color too assumes symbolic weight, marking shifts between intellect, intuition, and subconscious experience.
Negron’s graphic precision reflects early influences ranging from cartoons and anime to illustration, while his compositions often recall the frontal, devotional structures of Byzantine and early Renaissance painting.
Across his work, the everyday becomes a stage for less visible forces. Desire, ego, memory, spirituality, and transformation surface through seemingly ordinary bodies and encounters, allowing contemporary experience to slip between the psychological and the mythic.
His recent solo exhibitions include La Vision del Pan, Galerie Crèvecœur, Paris (2024); K11 Foundation, Shanghai (2024); Digitalis, Dangxia Foundation, Beijing (2023); and Spirits, Château Shatto, Los Angeles (2021). His work has also been presented at Art Basel Hong Kong (2021) and Qingdao Art Museum (2020).
Selected group exhibitions include A String in the Maze, Megan Mulrooney/Martha’s, Los Angeles (2025); Electricity-Shadow, Château Shatto, Los Angeles (2024); A Maze Zanine, Amaze Zaning, A-Mezzaning, Meza-9 at David Zwirner, New York (2022); and Heroic Bodies, Rudolph Tegners Museum, Denmark (2022).
