Jatinder Singh Durhailay is a painter and musician whose practice navigates the intersections of tradition, myth, and contemporary culture. Singh works across painting and drawing, often using naturally derived pigments. His work blends humor, heroism, and poignancy to portray Sikh culture and community, drawing on the intricate aesthetic of Indian Mughal miniature painting while addressing subjects ranging from environmentalism to popular culture. Durhailay’s artistic approach is deeply informed by his engagement with Indian classical music, including Kirtan and rare instruments such as the Dilruba and Taus. This practice imbues his work with a sense of rhythm, layering, and performative presence. By weaving together portraiture, narrative, and cultural memory, his paintings explore the fluidity of identity, the dialogue between heritage and the contemporary moment, and the enduring resonance of lived experience.
